God has made provision for us through His Son Jesus to provide a place of safe place of abiding in Jesus. Each level of our experience in Jesus is about His preeminence in us. He said apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:5). But abiding is more than just believing IN Jesus…as Christians, He is the Door of Salvation we have all walked through. It is the foundational piece of our relationship with Him. HE invited us. We answered and received Him as our Lord and Savior. Can you remember that moment? We all can. It began a journey of being transformed into His likeness.

This journey of transformation is our initial decision in a life-long journey of abiding IN Him. Like salvation, abiding is an invitation. “If you believe in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, you shall be saved (Acts 16:31).” It requires our action first. If we believe…we shall be saved. Abiding in Christ is impossible without first accepting Him, and like salvation, it is also an “if/then” statement requiring our action first.

Another “if/then” statement: Abide in Me, and I will abide in you. It’s a “you first” statement that opens our heart door for Him to come and abide in us. “Abide in” Jesus in Greek means:

…to give oneself wholly and mightily

…to be in a relation of rest

…to be in union with, to be united with

Many of us have been abiding in Christ at some level for many years. It is a wonderful place. It’s a place of fruitfulness and growth.

But God is Requiring More

In this Isaiah 60 Era, where darkness covers the earth and gross darkness the peoples, HIS Glory will be seen upon us (60:1-2). There are no levels in between, no medium-bright, no gray darkness. No, it is extreme…darkness and Light with no other intermediate levels of power.

A New Level of Abiding

God is calling us to an uncomfortable place of abiding, but within it lies the blinding glory to destroy gross darkness. In our journey of abiding, we have given Him our lives at that level. But at this one, more is required. Jesus illustrated it for us, showing us how to follow His example victoriously.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Gethsemane Experience

The Garden of Gethsemane was the very last place Jesus entered before He was arrested, falsely accused, beaten, whipped, spat upon, and crucified.

Gethsemane was a place:

…where His will was exchanged for the Father’s.

…of aloneness and isolation, a place of total submission and surrender.

…where the victory of the cross was won.

…where He left the old with resolve and determination for the new.

The Gethsemane experience was a heavy, crushing time of the human will of our Savior as He submitted all His desires, all His requests to avoid the pain and suffering that lay ahead, with all relinquishment and surrender to complete His mission upon this earth (Mark 14:36). There were three “nevertheless, not My Will but Yours be done” moments. He was stripped bare and was troubled and greatly distressed (33). Those He brought with Him for support in the Garden “fell asleep” (34). Every area of His will was crushed, so the pure oil of surrender remained. Somehow in all of this, a new abiding place became His strength and resolve to go forward. Jesus said, “It is enough! The hour has come…Rise up, let us go…” (41). The victory of the cross was won in the Garden. It was won in the new abiding place where the will of Jesus and the Father merged into complete unity. What began as a place of sorrow and distress was transformed into the “joy that was set before Him” (Hebrews 12:2) as His will came into complete submission to the Father.

The first recorded words of Jesus we read were “Did you not know that I MUST be about My Father’s business?” And the last words before His death were, “It is finished!” His journey of abiding concluded with a “giving oneself wholly and mightily, to be united and in union with Him.” It is a finishing work.

Why Abiding is Critical

Abiding in Jesus in this new era requires all of our hearts and wills. He is not satisfied with 95% of us. He wants it ALL. Why? Because it is necessary to prepare for the battles ahead with the gross darkness. All of Him releases all the Glory we will need to dispel the darkness with His glorious Light. He knows the battles around the bend that we cannot see.

The crushing times we have been experiencing recently have not been sent to destroy or discourage us. It has been to transform us into complete surrender to His will for the days ahead.

HE has been walking with us in our Garden, and unlike the disciples, He never slumbers nor sleeps. Can we make today about responding with “nevertheless, not my will but Thine be done. When people see us, they will see the Jesus in us. Abiding together: ALL of us for all of Him.

Our journey with the Lord is a joint venture.
